Carol is a human being created in the laboratory by the Mother computer, to save mankind after another computer, Gaia, which was connected to her, went mad and destroyed the world.
Gaia is sheltering and infecting the surviving humans, turning them into GMs, cyborgs under her control.
Shiori is a young human that Carol fell in love with in her early years.
Carol awakens from her lethargy to protect Shiori from the GM attack.
Carol can transform physically, from a man (when fighting) to a woman (when she heals from wounds), but also into any other form she wishes, as long as she is alive.
After saving Shiori from a first attack by Gaia, the two leave together with Shion's brother, Shizuma, Dr. Patty and the robot Big, who keeps inside a black box capable of reprogramming Gaia.
The group's mission is to reach the north pole, where Gaia's main computer should be.
Gaia sends Adam, the male version of Carol, who however cannot change shape, to stop them.
The relationship between Shiori and Carol (in the female version) becomes intimate.
