The series tells the adventures of the Ultimates, the Avengers of the “Ultimate” version, which inspired most of the elements included in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).
The first issue tells the moment of Captain America's death in 1945.
In this alternate universe, Bucky is just a reporter who accompanies Cap on his missions and documents them for the public.
Nazi technology is much more advanced here, so much so that they have built an H bomb that they are about to drop on Washington.
Cap manages to stop it by sacrificing himself, then ends up in the cold waters of the Arctic ocean.
A dark but pleasant story.

In the second issue Nick Fury begins to gather the members of the group.
Bruce Banner seems in demand only as a researcher for the super soldier formula, as the Hulk appears to have disappeared forever.
Head of the science department at the Triskelion (SHIELD base) is Hank Pym, flanked by his wife Janet, aka Wasp.
Pym develops the Giant Man formula, but he also found a way to communicate with ants.
Finally Tony Stark, Iron Man, who agrees to collaborate with Fury.
An introductory story, with few salient facts, but well presented.
